Teens

Steps for Teen Drivers

  1. 01

    Learner permit

Apply at 15½ if enrolled in or finished with driver education, or at 16 without it. The permit allows driving with a licensed adult aged 21 or older in the front seat.

  2. 02

    Driver education

Complete a state-approved course, including time behind the wheel with a certified instructor.

  3. 03

    Supervised practice

Log 50 hours of driving, 10 of them at night, signed by a parent or guardian.

  4. 04

    Hold the permit

Keep it for at least 180 days (about six months) with no traffic violations.

  5. 05

    Road test

Pass the driving test, then receive an intermediate license, which carries limits on late-night driving and passengers.

  6. 06

    Full license

The restrictions lift after a period of violation-free driving.

Adults

Steps for Adults and Newcomers

  1. 01

    Written test

Pass the knowledge test on Oklahoma traffic law and signs.

  2. 02

    Practice

If you are new to driving, take lessons until you are comfortable in traffic and on highways.

  3. 03

    Road test

Pass the driving test. You can take it at a state-approved driving school.

  4. 04

    License

Take your passing result to a Tag Agency.

If you hold a license from another country, you will normally still need to pass the Oklahoma written and road tests. See our adult driving lessons.

Paperwork

Documents to Bring

Service Oklahoma asks for proof of identity, your Social Security number and proof of Oklahoma residency. Applicants under 18 also need a parent or guardian and school documents.

Check the current document list on the Service Oklahoma website before your visit, because the wrong paperwork is the most common reason people are turned away.

Road Test at ProDrive Academy

ProDrive Academy is approved by the State of Oklahoma to give the official road test. We test 7 days a week, in our car or yours, and when you pass you go straight to a Tag Agency for your license instead of waiting for an appointment at Service Oklahoma.

Not ready yet? A practice drive with an instructor beforehand is the single best way to pass the first time. Road test fees and details.
