The Two Limits on an Intermediate License

An Oklahoma intermediate license lets you drive from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM and carry one passenger. Both limits have exceptions, and both end when you move up to an unrestricted license.

These rules are set by Service Oklahoma and can change, so confirm them before you go.

Driving Hours and Exceptions

With an intermediate license you can drive from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM. The hour limit does not apply in these two cases.

  • You are driving to or from activities related to school, church or work
  • A licensed driver who is at least 21 years old is sitting in the front seat

Passenger Limits and Exceptions

With an intermediate license you can carry one passenger. You can carry more than one passenger in these two cases.

  • All of your passengers are members of your household
  • A licensed driver who is at least 21 years old is sitting in the front seat

Who Gets an Intermediate License

An intermediate license is what a driver under 18 receives after holding a learner permit for 180 days and passing the road test. It is a required step before an unrestricted license for anyone under 18.

The minimum age for an intermediate license is 16 with driver education and 16½ without it. If you are 18 or older, you can apply for a driver's license without going through the intermediate stage.

When the Limits End With Driver Education

If you completed driver education, you can apply for an unrestricted license once you meet these three conditions.

  • You have held your intermediate license for at least 6 months
  • You have had no traffic convictions for the 180 days before the unrestricted license is issued
  • You are at least 16½ years old

When the Limits End Without Driver Education

If you did not complete driver education, you can apply for an unrestricted license once you meet these three conditions.

  • You have held your intermediate license for at least 12 months
  • You have had no traffic convictions for the 12 months before the unrestricted license is issued
  • You are at least 17 years old

What Changes With an Unrestricted License

An unrestricted Class D license has no limits on the hours you drive or the passengers you carry. Service Oklahoma requires no extra test to move from an intermediate license to an unrestricted license.
