When a Teen Can Get a Learner Permit
A teen can apply for a learner permit at 15½ if they are enrolled in or have completed driver education. Without driver education, the permit age is 16.
The permit allows driving with a licensed adult aged 21 or older in the front seat. These rules are set by Service Oklahoma and can change, so confirm them before you go.
Steps From Permit to License
- 01
Learner permit
Apply at 15½ if enrolled in or finished with driver education, or at 16 without it.
- 02
Driver education
Complete a state-approved course, including time behind the wheel with a certified instructor.
- 03
Supervised practice
Log 50 hours of driving, 10 of them at night, signed by a parent or guardian.
- 04
Hold the permit
Keep it for at least 180 days (about six months) with no traffic violations.
- 05
Road test
Pass the driving test, then receive an intermediate license, which carries limits on late-night driving and passengers.
- 06
Full license
The restrictions lift after a period of violation-free driving.
The 50 Supervised Hours
Oklahoma requires 50 hours of supervised driving, 10 of them at night. A parent or guardian logs the hours before the intermediate license.
Lessons with an instructor come on top of that. Our packages include 6 or more hours one-on-one with a certified instructor.
Documents for the Permit
Service Oklahoma asks for proof of identity, your Social Security number and proof of Oklahoma residency. Applicants under 18 also need a parent or guardian and school documents.
Check Service Oklahoma's current document list before your visit. The wrong paperwork is the most common reason people are turned away.
